LIBERTY, Mo. -- Police have charged a 41-year-old Liberty, Missouri man after he admitted to shooting his mother.

Aaron J. Harrington is facing first-degree assault charges and armed criminal action.

Around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Liberty police responded to a reported shooting behind the Dollar General Store in the area of 338 S. 291 Highway.

When officers arrived, they found a 65-year-old woman, later identified as Nancy J. Herr, as who had been shot. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The City of Liberty confirmed Friday she is from Kansas City, Missouri, and is the mother of Harrington.

Officers found and arrested Harrington on foot near the Dickey’s BBQ at 600 S. 291 Highway.

During his interview with officials, Harrington admitted to shooting his mother saying she was "the devil" and she "had been trying to have him killed since he was 10 years old." He also told police that he shot his mother "more than one time, and less than 10 times," according to court documents.

As of Friday morning, the victim remained hospitalized in serious condition.

The case remained under investigation late Friday morning.
