Hillary Clinton announced her vice presidential pick, who is a man who grew up in Kansas City - Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

“We’re very proud of Tim,” said Laurence Freeman, chief advancement officer at Rockhurst High School.

Kaine grew up in Kansas City and attended Rockhurst High School. He graduated in 1976 with classmate Jay Reardon.

“He did whatever he could do to be a part of something, that’s just kind of the way Tim liked it,” said Reardon.

During high school, Kaine was the student body president and a member of the National Honor Society. He traveled to Honduras on a school mission trip where his passion for politics and helping people first emerged.

"He had that healthy dissatisfaction that he has today about making the world a better place and trying to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Freeman.

In 2008, President Obama first considered Kaine as a running mate. Now, 2016 is his year.

"It’s a neat testament to a person in KC who worked hard, he was full of honesty and integrity and he’s worked his way up in the political world. We need more people like that in his roles,” said Reardon.
