LAWRENCE, Kan. --

Massachusetts Street is a main drag in Lawrence. It's filled with bars and restaurants and typically packed with people. That was the case early Sunday morning when shots rang out, killing three people and injuring two others.

A single bouquet and a box of candles mark the corner of Massachusetts and 11th, where one of the three victims took some of his last breaths.

Alex Womack lives just three blocks away. He was out with friends when he came across the aftermath of the shooting.

"I'm going to think about it a lot. I can't walk past this corner and forget that," Womack said.

Another witness, who did not want to show his face or reveal his name for fear of retaliation, told 41 Action News he heard several men arguing outside Brothers Bar and Grill. Then, he heard gunshots.

"It was just pop, pop, pop. About 18 shots went off. I hit the ground," the witness said.

On Sunday night, some witnesses returned to the crime scene to light candles for the victims. The candles were set up by Jason Phoenix, a local musician who said he felt compelled to do something after the tragic shooting.

"I believe in community. I'm just one person, and although I didn't know the people who were involved, I'm here for my community," Phoenix said.

We are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information relating to it to contact the Lawrence Police at (785) 832-7509 or Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County at (785)843-TIPS. Tips made to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous.
