The father of a young woman killed in an apartment near the Broadway Bridge say his daughter was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Fingerprint dust on a door at the Holiday Apartments on NW Harlem Road is one of the signs that the hunt is on for the man that shot and killed Robbin Baska.
The victim’s parents said on Friday afternoon, Baska was taking a nap at her mom’s apartment when an armed man forced his way in.
"It woke Robbin up and she stood up real quick when the gentlemen had a gun to her mother's head and before she could even react, he shot her in the face,” Robbie Baska, the victim’s father said in a phone interview Saturday.
Robbie Baska also said he doesn't believe his daughter was the intended target.
The 19-year-old was supposed to be in Colorado this weekend for her father and stepmother’s vow renewals, but her car broke down.
"We were at our rehearsal yesterday at the church when we got the phone call at the church about our daughter,” Brandi Baska, the stepmother said.
Friday’s crime scene was only a few doors down from Robbin's own apartment.
“Most of the time that I see her she is walking her dog, she's a very sweet person like she don't bother nobody she doesn’t do anything she just goes to work,” Coshaun Calhoun, a neighbor said.
Baska’s parents said she had recently been promoted to manager at the McDonald’s in North Kansas City and was looking to move into a new apartment next week.
"She was very happy that her life was moving in a positive direction she had some setbacks in her life but she had taken some control of that she was very happy, very positive on her new outlook,” Robbie Baska said.
The young woman was also aspiring to pursue a career in law enforcement.
"She definitely loved her brothers and sisters, you could call Robbin a protector,” Brandi Baska said.
Police tonight are working to track the suspect in this case. They haven’t released a description of the gunman.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Robbin's funeral expenses.
If you know anything about this fatal shooting, call police or the KC Crimestoppers hotline (816) 474-TIPS (8477).
