A tractor-trailer, tow truck and three cars were involved in an accident that caused a fire, according to officials.
The crash happened at Interstate 435 eastbound of 69 Highway in Johnson County around 5 p.m.
Overland Park Fire Department said at least one person was critically injured and one suffered minor injuries. Three others were also involved but were not injured.
OPFD said in a release they believe it is a "rear-end accident" but haven't determined the exact cause.
Eastbound I-435 is closed west of Antioch. Westbound I-435 was also closed but it has since re-opened. Motorists are advised to use other routes.
Michael Cross was on the road when the crash happened.
"I suddenly saw a big black plume of smoke go up in front of me," Cross said. "As I got close and was trying to get a good look, started having small explosions go off."
Sara Meyers saw the crash while walking her dog.
"We heard four big booms, one, two, three and four. We saw all this flame coming up in the air," said Meyers. "I thought they were gunshots or something. They were just loud, very loud."
