Big Brothers Big Sisters match more like family

In a special match with Big Brothers Big Sisters, DJ Stafford not only has a friend, but he also has a family.

DJ and Ryan Soukup were matched through BBBS ten years ago, making them one of the longest running matches in the program.

"DJ was eight when we met. And I really loved the idea of being matched to someone that age," said Soukup.

DJ was having trouble in school, and his mom believed he needed a male role model.

"As I hung out more with Ryan I saw that that type of lifestyle wasn't for me, and so I kind of needed to change my ways and Ryan was the positive influence that jump started that."

An influence he receives not just from Soukup, but his entire family.

"A lot of my favorite activities are on Sunday nights and we have dinner and play games together and my kids, I love to see them so excited to see DJ when he walks in the door," said Soukup.

During their ten-year match, Soukup had three kids of his own, who've all welcomed DJ with open arms.

"My middle son, Ethan, is five. As I was leaving he comes up and says, 'Dad, make sure you tell DJ he's my best friend,'" said Soukup.

The family helped lead DJ down the right path. A road that will take him to Oklahoma State this fall on a scholarship.

"I can't even tell what I would be doing right now, but because of Ryan and Big Brothers Big Sisters I'm proud of where I am today," said DJ.

Now, no matter where he goes, DJ knows there's always a family to come home to.

"That's a pretty awesome feeling knowing I'm part of that village now," said DJ.
