If volunteering is the backbone of a community, we may have a slipped disc or two.
Scott Cruce is working to fix that, one kid at a time. He's a mentor through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kansas City.
"I've had three 'Littles' over the years and I'm still involved in their lives," he said.

When he's not being a 'Big,' he's working to match them. Cruce says most of the kids actually come from pretty stable home environments.
"Well we have some kids in our programs where that's not the case," he said. "And our 'Bigs' are the most consistent part of their life."
The problem is there are more kids in need than volunteers. More than 500 kids in the program are in need of a match right now and more than 80 percent of those unmatched are boys.
"They don't have consistent adult men in their lives," Cruce adds.

With a commitment of just a few hours a month, you can change that, without cramping your lifestyle too much.
"I've had so much fun as a 'Big' over the years, going to ball games, just doing things you're going to do anyway," he said.
