Friday afternoon, the city of Kansas City issued a citation against the owner of a badly-abused dog.

The city said the citation holds an animal abuse charge that, if found guilty, carries a penalty of up to $1,000 and up to 180 days.

Earlier this week, KC Pet Project took in a dog named Roadrunner. The dog had been choked and thrown off a balcony. Roadrunner’s injuries were so bad, he had to have surgery to remove both of his eyes.

“On a daily basis, a lot of dogs are in need of medical care, some more than others,” Tori Fugate with KC Pet Project said. “This is definitely one of the worst cases of abuse that we’ve seen be somebody deliberately trying to hurt an animal.”

Chris Hernandez, Director of City Communications, said due to the severity of the alleged abuse, the case has also been presented to state prosecutors for higher level charges. If the state pursues charges, those would supersede the city charges, which would be dropped to allow the state prosecution.

Roadrunner is doing well in a foster home.
