Crews found the body of a teenage boy in a lake in Shawnee Tuesday night.

The deceased teenager has been identified as 17-year-old Treyvon Mays. He was a senior at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School.

Officials said several teenagers were swimming and paddle boarding together in a lake at Lakeview Estates near 56th and Widmer. While several were in the water, they lost track of their friend who was swimming. They did not see him go under water so they were not sure if he got out and walked to a friend’s house or if he was still in the water.

The Overland Park dive team and Shawnee fire and police crews searched the lake.

Shawnee police told 41 Action News the boy drowned. Police were able to locate the boy's family.

The Shawnee Mission School District released the following statement:

Our hearts are very heavy as we share with you the sad news of the loss of a member of our Shawnee Mission Northwest family. We received confirmation this morning that last night one of our students, Treyvon Mays, died in a tragic accident at a neighborhood lake. Treyvon was a vibrant part of our school community and will be missed by the many friends and staff who knew and worked with him. We have been in contact with Treyvon’s family and will continue to keep them in our thoughts and offer support during this very difficult time. Arrangements for memorial services have not yet been finalized. We will share updates as they become available.
