Early police report says man shot by off-duty officer in Costco entered store yelling, pointing gun

LENEXA, Kan. – A preliminary police report is shedding some light on what may have led up to a shooting in a Lenexa Costco on Sunday.

According to the report, a 58-year-old suspect came into the store yelling and pointing a handgun at people inside, threatening them.

Lenexa police said that when they got there, they learned an armed off-duty KCK officer, identified as Capt. Michael Howell by KCKPD, had been made aware of the gunman by fleeing customers.

Capt. Howell, a 22-year veteran of the department, told investigators the suspect engaged him in a gunfight, so he shot and killed the man.

The deceased suspect was identified by Lenexa police as Ronald O. Hunt, of Edwardsville, Kansas. On a police report for the incident, Hunt is listed as a driver for Swift Transportation. The company's corporate headquarters declined to comment. 

Costco also declined comment for this story. 

A release from KCKPD said the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Team is investigating the incident. 

Capt. Howell is waiting until the investigation is complete to speak with the media.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said Hunt is from Kansas City, KS. Police have since told 41 Action News he is from Edwardsville, KS.
