KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A large sinkhole opened under a washed-out road Thursday afternoon near the Isle of Capri Casino.
The gaping sinkhole was located near Shelley Avenue and Guinotte Avenue, just east of Interstate 35 and a few blocks south of the train tracks that run parallel to East Front Street.
The sinkhole collapsed on an eight-inch water line and gas line, spewing natural gas from the leak and forcing the evacuation of nearby businesses.
Crews from Spire gas company reduced pressure on the line and KCP&L crews cut power to a line near the gas leak.
The road had been crumbling and was closed earlier this week after the pavement began to buckle following a water main break, making it unsafe for traffic.
Workers were still trying to repair the gas leak and other problems late Thursday night.
No word on when the work would be completed and evacuees allowed back in the businesses.
