#GivingTuesday kicks off charitable giving season in Kansas City

We’ve said our thanks, pushed through lines at the mall and spent too much money online. Now it’s time for Giving Tuesday.

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving marks the official kickoff to the charitable giving season. After many people give thanks, the online donation campaign helps push many nonprofit organizations toward their year end goal.

This call to action contrasts the craziness of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

If you’d like, you can make your donation count right here in Kansas City.

Organizers at local food bank Harvesters said it provides food for 620 nonprofits annually.

It also said one in five children in our community face a risk of hunger – which means they may not know where today's meal is coming from.

Sarah Biles, director of communications at Harvesters, tells 41 Action News if you give now until the end of the year, every dollar will make six meals. Starting Tuesday, an anonymous donor is matching each contribution made, up to $500,000 until the end of the year.

“I'm really hopeful this holiday season, when you're thinking about your loved ones and your family, that you might stop a minute to think about others who are in need and struggling,” said Biles.

This comes on the heels of a WalletHub survey that lists Kansas as the 14th most giving state and Missouri as the 15th.

Children’s Mercy and City Union Mission in Kansas City are also asking for donations.
