Kansas City police are investigating the city’s 12th homicide of the month: the death of a 38-year-old father.

Ron Birmingham told 41 Action News his stepson, Charles Bolton, was shot in the head early Friday morning at the Capital Inn in Kansas City.

Birmingham said he believes his stepson knew his killer.

He said Bolton was the oldest of seven kids and a father to four of his own.

His loss is hitting the family hard.

“I’m angry, I’m sick and tired, we all go do these things, and it doesn’t deter another devastation that's probably going to take place this evening,” Birmingham said.

He and his family plan to take action against the violence.

Bolton’s sister, LaRonica Birmingham, said it’s time for the community to step up. “You have to think about the families. His children, our parents. The fact that you're able to shoot someone like that, I feel like it's almost insanity, and sooner or later we have to start taking responsibility."

Anyone with information is urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
