The City budget process began Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri at the Budget Committee meeting.
Kansas City police submitted a request for $250.8 million for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Police explained the budget would cover expenses for payroll, the pension plan and healthcare.
Some city leaders asked police officials to examine the possibility of consolidating services to save money.
The Kansas City Fire Department presented a budget for $166.3 million for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Fire executives explained the money would cover salaries and benefits.
City leaders asked the fire department to review and try to decrease it's projected overtime budget.
The city budget is expected to be approved by late March.
