LEAWOOD, Kan. — A family is safe after their attached garage caught fire Monday morning.

The Leawood Fire Department said the fire started in the garage of a home in the 2900 block of W 123rd Terrace. The fire damaged a bedroom above the garage and totaled two cars inside.

The family of four who lives at the home was out safely by the time firefighters arrived. The family’s two dogs are safe as well.

The deputy fire chief said the family is fortunate the home's roof was not made of wooden shingles because they would have gone up in flames in seconds.

An investigator will work to determine the cause of the fire.
