The Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded to an apartment fire at 11:26 a.m. on Monday.

According to the fire department, one caller reported hearing a “muffled explosion” and seeing a portion of the apartment at 2419 SE Missouri 291 Highway roof lifting upward. He went around to the front of the building and saw flames coming from a second floor apartment.

Half of the second floor of the two-story, 14-unit apartment building was on fire when crews arrived. Residents were told to evacuate. All residents were accounted for, but several pets were missing.

The fire was under control by 1:11 p.m.

One person was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to an area hospital, according to officials.

On Thursday, the Lee's Summit Fire Department said the victim died at an area hospital.

Three apartments on the second floor had significant damage and there was significant water damage in the apartments below.

The fire department said the fire originated in a second floor apartment. Initial reports indicated that a propane furnace was being lit at the time of the fire. The Missouri State Fire Marshal is investigating.

The fire displaced 22 people. The Masonic Lodge next door to the building provided temporary shelter while the tenants could make arrangements with the Red Cross for assistance.
