A man is in serious but stable condition after being shot by a police officer in Kansas City, Missouri.

The shooting happened near 72nd and Prospect just after midnight Sunday morning.

When police arrived, a large crowd had gathered and a man reportedly was brandishing a firearm. An officer told the man to show his hands, but he reached into his pocket and began to raise the handgun toward the officer. The officer fired two shots, hitting the man in the abdomen.

Authorities immediately started rendering aid to the man, later identified as Jamil Jackson,18, and attempted to control the crowd.

A second suspect approached the officers aggressively and refused to get back. The second suspect was tased and taken into custody.

While authorities were giving medical attention to the shooting victim, officers say they heard gunfire nearby. Police believe someone was shooting at them.

The officers took cover and protected the injured victims until backup arrived.

The shooting victim was taken into surgery and has been upgraded to serious but stable condition.

A short time later, another man showed up at an area hospital with non-life threatening gunshot injuries. The victim was shot at a club nearby the location of the crime scene.

It is believed the gunfire officers heard and responded to while patrolling were at the time that male victim was shot.

An additional crime scene was located in front of 7200 Prospect.

Jackson has been charged with assault on a law enforcement officer for pulling the gun. He faces assault of a law enforcement officer in the 2nd degree and armed criminal action. Prosecutors have requested a bond of $50,000.
