KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One family is left with just the clothes on their back after a fire destroyed their home last Sunday in south Kansas City.
“My daughter called me and told me the house was on fire,” Shayla Thompson told 41 Action News.
They’re staying with her mother until they figure out what to do.
Thompson got that phone call in the middle of the night.
“I was out of town. I was in Dallas in support of the Chiefs,” Thompson said.
Cutting the trip short, she rushed back to Kansas City to find her home gutted out.
“I was hysterical. At first, I didn’t believe it,” Thompson said.
Officials said the fire started around 1 a.m. They don’t know what caused it yet.
Shayla says her four kids weren't home at the time, either.
“When I saw the house, I was just devastated, like I lost everything. I’m a single parent and I try to make my house comfortable for my four kids. So, I mean, I lost everything. I don’t have insurance, so nothing can be replaced by insurance,” Thompson told us.
Her kids’ birthdays are coming up, and so are the holidays, putting the family in a tough position.
“Now I got to just move forward, and focus on what’s the next step from here,” Thompson said.
Thompson’s father set up a GoFundMe page to get them back on their feet.
