Man arrested in Lawrence motel shooting that left a 23-year-old man dead

LAWRENCE, Kan. - UPDATE 9/5, 9:30 a.m. – The Lawrence Police Department has made an arrest in the shooting death of a 23-year-old man at a motel on North 3rd Street.

Nineteen-year-old Tyrone J. Carvin is in custody in Kansas City.

Carvin suffered a gunshot wound in the shooting and was treated and released from a Kansas City area hospital.

He will face first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault charges in Douglas County.

ORIGINAL - A 23-year-old man passed away from his injuries after being shot at a motel in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday night.

Cameron A. Hooks of Lenexa, Kansas, was shot at the Motel 6 on 3rd Street around 11:30 p.m.

The two other victims, both men in their 20’s, were in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not released their identities.

“The hotel was very busy,” said Sergeant Amy Rhoades of the Lawrence Police Department, “There were lots of people in the area when it happened, lots of people staying in the hotel.”

Bonnie Tempinski stayed the night at the hotel. She told 41 Action News she heard the shooting.

“I want to say it was right above me but I’m not sure,” said Tempinski.

She was about to call the front desk to report the noisy people above her when she heard something frightening.

“It was just some woman yelling ‘Help! Help! Help!’ I was like, okay, are they fighting? Maybe there’s a couple up there fighting,” Tempinski said. “Until that bam came and I was like now it’s got to be serious.”

Police said they don’t know of any woman involved in the shooting, only the three male victims.

Tempinski said she chose to stop here as she traveled across the country from Chicago to Las Vegas.

“I thought this one was going to be pretty safe. Small little town, not a great big one. I guess I was wrong,” said Tempinski.

Police are investigating the shooting, the say all three men were staying at the hotel.

No other information has been released on the victims, or possible suspects.

They said it's possible they are looking for more than one shooting. No information on what may have led up to the shooting has been released.
