The city is coming closer to an agreement with the families of two boys who were hit by a mini-van while skateboarding in Kansas City.

One of the boys, 8-year-old Jordan Hale, was killed and the other boy, 6-year-old Jesus Gonzalez, survived with severe injuries.

Both families sued Kansas City stating the city failed to protect pedestrians by not having shoulders, crosswalks, or sidewalks in place.

The city is working to pay the families in a $475,000 settlement.

“Future people getting hit if we had a sidewalk probably save lives so probably the only way we are going to get a side walk here is to have somebody else get hit and they may do something, I don’t know,” said neighbor David Austin.

A spokesperson with Kansas City’s Public Works Department says plans are being made to fix the intersection, including adding curbs and sidewalks. Designs should be ready in the next several weeks.

The city will vote on the settlement on July 7.
