LENEXA, Kan. -- Tis' the season for break-ins and burglaries and thieves are not feeling the holiday spirit when they’re targeting you and your new stuff.
“Unfortunately, they're doing their shopping in your vehicle or your home," said Officer Danny Chavez with the Lenexa Police Department.
It doesn't even matter what time of the day it is.
"Really, thieves are looking for any opportunity they get, even if it's broad daylight and people around," said Chavez.
Just last week, Lenexa Police said several cars were broken into near a shopping center while the owners were making their rounds.
If you're going to be shopping at several different stores, police insist you lock your new items in the trunk, or cover them with something so that they're out of sight.
"They're busy this time of year. They forget that they've got shopping bags in their vehicle and again that's a very obvious target for would-be burglars," said Chavez.
To keep yourself from becoming a target, be sure to take all of your valuables inside with you.
Thieves are not only targeting cars, but homes as well. Make sure to lock your front door, and don't forget about other entry points, like sliding glass doors and windows.
If you’re going to be out of town, police suggest having someone check on the interior and exterior of your home.
They also suggest doing anything that will make it look less apparent that you’re away. Things like home security systems and doorbell cameras are also a great tool.
Some police departments, like Lenexa, offer a house watch program as well.
