KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Florida couple’s recreational vehicle caught fire Thursday, shutting down parts of westbound Interstate 70 for two hours.

The motor home was towing a Mercedes Benz on a trailer when it caught fire on I-70 near the interchange with Interstate 435 in Kansas City, Kansas.

The couple managed to get the RV to the right shoulder and unhooked the trailer, saving it from any damage, but a Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman told 41 Action News “the RV was a total loss.”

The incident happened around 3:16 p.m. and responding fire crews shut down I-70 westbound completely for about 15 minutes because of reduced visibility due to smoke.

There were no injuries and the couple, who were headed to Colorado, managed to save some personal effects after the fire was extinguished.

All lanes were expected to be reopened by around 5:15 p.m. after crews finished applying oil dry to the interstate.
