The holiday has more home cooking fires than any other day of the year. In fact, Independence Fire Inspector Glenda Knicely said you’re 75 percent more likely to have a fire in the kitchen this day.
Firefighters said it is important to not overfill your pot or fryer. They recommend you check how much your pot can hold with water before putting anything in it.
Here are some other tips for cooking in the kitchen:
- Make sure the smoke alarms work. Test them by holding the button, you should hear a loud beep!
- Don’t leave dishes cooking unattended
- Remove anything flammable from nearby the stove
- Keep children at least three feet away from the stove or where food is being prepared
Turkey fryers can make a delicious meal, but they also can be a fire hazard.
Here are some of the top causes for home fires, brought to you by the International Association of Fire Fighters.
