Kansas City, Kansas police are investigating a reported battery outside the Legends Outlets after a man allegedly started yelling racial slurs at a college student.

Robert Holliday told 41 Action News he was visiting his family after finishing his basketball season at Vermont Tech. On Sunday, he decided to take his nephews out for a “day of fun,” which included a trip to the Legends to see dinosaurs at the T-Rex Cafe.

“We were just trying to have a good time and then the dude just came out of nowhere and started calling us n*****,” said Holliday.

According to the police report, a white man in a black pick-up truck started yelling racial slurs at Holliday and his nephews. The man, the report says, suddenly stopped his car in the middle of the parking lot and charged at Holliday.

"He drove up to us and got out of the car and was like what did you say n*****. And I said go, leave us alone,” said Holliday. “He got out of his car and I told my nephews to back up because I didn’t want them to get hurt.”

The two men started fighting as strangers rushed Holliday’s nephews, 8, 6 and 5 years old, away from the scene.

“It was very, very chaotic. Very, very chaotic,” said Joseph Jackson, who witnessed the incident. "The guy should have never stopped his car and shouted racial slurs because of the color of his skin. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Police do not have any suspect or vehicle information. According to police, the suspect drove off before officers arrived.
