Charges possible against Olathe student accused of making a threat

Posted

Police are investigating after a 14-year-old student allegedly made a threat against several Olathe high schools Monday night.

According to police, the student, a freshman at Olathe South High School, sent out threats on social media on Monday night. The threats referenced several students.

Police were notified of the threat on Tuesday morning and arrested the student at home.

The Olathe School District notified parents Tuesday of the threat, alerting parents at Olathe South, Olathe East and Olathe North High Schools.

“I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred last night. We received information that a student in our district posted a message to social media after school hours, which included a generic threat against district students and various high schools in the district. In an abundance of caution, we wanted to let you know about this incident, and that the Olathe Police are working closely with the student and their family and do not believe there is any credible threat at this time.

We take all threats against our school community very seriously and we appreciate the vigilance of our students and the quick response of the Olathe Police Department. We are planning for a productive day of school today.”

Johnson County prosecutors say they have the case and could file charges against the juvenile as early as Wednesday.
