Greek Fest happening this weekend

The Olympics may be in Brazil this year, but let's not forget where the games all started - Greece. And while Kansas City's Greek Fest happens every year, this year is particularly special for that very reason.

The Olympics as we know them started back in 1896, but the world's biggest athletic event is actually rooted in The Greek Olympics which go back to 776 B.C. The Games were held in honor of Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia.

From calculus to astronomy and mythology to even the Olympics, Marco Psihountas is proud of Greece's contributions to the world.

“It's kind of cool to sit back and reflect on history and get to know that my ancestors were a part of that,” said the Greek Fest volunteer.

While the Olympics aren't in Greece this year, he's still celebrating those traditions this weekend with Greek Fest.

And the deserts are so sinful, the cooks at St. Dionysius Greek Orthodox Church have to rely on a heavenly figure to keep a watchful eye on them.

“People should come hungry, and if they leave hungry, that's their fault,” said Greek Fest Organizer Athan Perahoritis.

The party starts Friday at 5 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. at St. Dionysius Greek Orthodox Church in Overland Park. It’s also happening Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
