An Independence family is asking for help after their disabled 17-year-old son's dune buggy was stolen overnight Tuesday.

According to a police report, Michael Brende told officers that the family's blue and black dune buggy was stolen overnight. He said he had parked it in their fenced yard and removed the battery. Thieves had cut a cable lock that had secured the fence and taken the dune buggy, according to police.

Brende said the dune buggy had two seats and chrome wheels with a roll cage. He estimated the value of it to be about $3,000.

Brende's son, Johnathan Brende, is non-verbal and a quadriplegic. His family says Johnathan Brende loves to go for rides in the dune buggy.

The family asks anyone with information to call 816-255-9788 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477. They have also set up a GoFundMe page.
