An inmate was found dead in his jail cell at the Franklin County Adult Detention Center Friday night while officers were conducting a security check.
Benjamin F. Mastel, 35, of Ottawa, was unresponsive when officials checked his one-person cell around 9:45 p.m. According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, staff used CPR and an automated external defibrillator in an effort to resuscitate him before medical personnel transported Mastel to Ransom Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The inmate's death is being investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Mastel was arrested April 19 for aggravated battery.
