Groundskeeping crews at Kauffman Stadium happy with the streak of rain

A mild winter helped ground crews at Kauffman Stadium get ready for the season.

The long stretch of rain that kept groundskeepers from mowing the grass, raking the dirt, or painting lines hasn't put them under the gun.

"The end of February, first of March was outstanding for (weather). It put us weeks ahead schedule, so these last 13 days of rain hadn't set us back at all," said Trevor Vance, the director of the grounds crew at the K.

By the time the rain started the crew had most of the work done.

"All we need to do is put some stripes down, paint some logos and that’s about it," Vance said.

Normally, a lot of rain before opening day can make things really difficult, but not this year.

Even though there is a lot of behind the scenes work going on at the K, Vance says they will be ready for the home opener.

"It can be stressful, it can be a lot of fun obviously with the success we have had. But at the end of the day, regardless, you are getting ready for major league baseball, and that is pretty special," Vance said.
