How do you explain Thanksgiving to a family that's never celebrated the holiday?

That's where Della Lamb Community Services steps in for the thousands of refugees it has helped resettle to the Kansas City area. Part of that task is also providing the families with a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

This year the community service organization is slated to help 1,200 families made up of refugees, but also locals who can't afford a turkey dinner with all the fixings.

"I hope and pray along with many others that these families will take these groceries back and enjoy a joyous day of celebration," said Judy Akers with Della Lamb. "That a day that might otherwise be filled with dread and defeat or hopelessness, turns in to a day of miraculous celebration."

This year, though, Della Lamb is coming up short. It still needs donations of either food items or cash. A donation of $35 provides a full thanksgiving meal for a family of five.

Alternatively, the organization needs the following items:

  • 10-14 lb. Frozen Turkeys
  • Instant Mashed Potatoes (13oz Box)
  • Turkey Gravy Mix
  • Stuffing Mix
  • Canned Corn
  • Canned Green Beans
  • Canned Cranberry Sauce
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • Chocolate Frosting Mix
  • Frozen Pie Crust
  • Canned Pumpkin
  • 1 lb. Granulated Sugar
  • Eggs by the Dozen
  • 1 lb. Margarine
  • Flour
  • Pasta
  • Baking Soda
  • Powder Cheese

You can deliver food donations or mail checks to Della Lamb's administrative offices located at: 500 Woodland Ave., Kansas City, Missouri 64106
