A semi-truck caught fire on EB I-470 near Pryor Road Tuesday afternoon.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said a semi-driver pulled over on the side of the road after experiencing a mechanical issue. The driver was not injured, and no other cars were involved.
The fire caused major traffic delays in the area. Only 1 lane of traffic is getting by on I-470 EB at Pryor Road. Use a different route if possible.
According to a statement from the Lee's Summit Fire Department, the fire was likely caused by a mechanical failure but an exact cause hasn't been officially determined.
The cab of the semi was already completely involved when crews arrived but the occupants were safely outside the vehicle, according to the statement. Crews successfully contained the fire to the cab.
Because there were no hydrants close by, trucks from the Prairie Township Fire Protection District and the Central Jackson County Fire District were used to bring more water to the scene.
It was brought under control by 1:20 p.m. but crews stayed at the scene to keep an eye on potential hotspots.
