KC Zoo uses hedgehog to predict the weather

Posted at 7:58 AM, Feb 02, 2016

Move over Punxsutawney Phil.  There’s a new hog in town!

Amy Rose the Hedgehog made an early morning appearance, Tuesday, at the Kansas City Zoo to make a prediction or two, but mostly to have her breakfast of mealy worms.

According to Sean Putney, in charge of living exhibits at the zoo, groundhogs have been predicting the weather in this country since the 1700s, but hedgehogs’ prognostication abilities have been used since Roman times.

The basic idea is the same:  see the shadow, more winter.  No shadow, early spring.

She is about 3-years-old and fully grown.  Being so little, her pointy spikes are her defense.

While she can’t see very well, her tiny nose is working overtime.

So, what did Amy Rose say about an early Spring?  She was non-committal.  Apparently, Amy Rose is being diplomatic in this political season.
