Olathe Northwest students filled the gymnasium in two sessions.
First the juniors and seniors came in to hear the presentation, then the freshmen and sophomores.
Each group listened as 41 Action News Anchor Christa Dubill explained news stories she’s covered about teens putting themselves in danger simply by how they use their phones and social media.
As part of her program, she brought Special Agent Michael Daniels with the FBI. He is a member of the Child Exploitation Task Force. He talks about what he and his team see, about how the bad guys do what they do, and about real cases of people he's busted locally.
The two talked about criminals seek out young people online and try to trick them right here in our community.
They talked about the importance of private accounts. About how allowing people you don’t know to follow or friend you exposes not only you, but your friends.
As part of Christa's program, she provides parents with conversation starters so they can continue the conversation at home.
- What are your favorite apps?
- Are your accounts private?
- Do you know everyone who has friended or followed you?
- Has anything ever happened online that made you uncomfortable?
- Has anyone you don’t know ever tried to chat with you?
