Weightlifting is definitely not my cup of tea!
I realized that during a workout with the Y.E.S. Fitness Center weightlifting team in Lee's Summit. We were doing a warm up without weights, using only the bar and I couldn't handle the squats. How embarrassing.
So I stopped exercising and started doing what I do best -- reporting. I discovered a great group of young men led by an awesome coach who teaches technique and life lessons.
Coach Zach Schluender is the weightlifting coach and a powerful role model. Schluender has competed in two senior world weightlifting competitions and encourages his students to aspire to greatness.
"Weightlifting helped me build my own confidence and strength, so I want to pass that on to my students," he explained.
Five members of his YES Fitness weightlifting team qualified at regionals in St. Joseph to attend the national competition in Austin, Texas starting on June 23rd. Joshua Carnnahan, Kirk McClain, Grant Fristo, Ryan Wagy and Dawson Meese will be competing at the national tournament.
They explained that the coach teaches technique, speed and focus -- key elements that led to their success at regionals.
The team set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the trip to Austin. They need $2,000 for travel expenses and some new equipment.
Go YES Fitness weightlifting team -- do your best at nationals and have fun!
