The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning consumers not to eat any shell eggs distributed by Good Earth Egg Company of Bonne Terre, Missouri, following a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections.
According to the CDC, eight people infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Oranienburg were reported from Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. Two people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.
Most people infected with Salmonella develop the following signs and symptoms 12-72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria, according to the CDC:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Abdominal cramps
The CDC said the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Children younger than 5 years old, adults older than 65 years old, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
The CDC advises that eggs distributed by Good Earth Egg Company were sold under different brand names. If you’re not sure if the eggs are from the company, ask the place where you bought them or the restaurant where you’re eating them.
- When in doubt, throw them out, even if some of the eggs have been eaten and no one has gotten sick.
- Don’t try to cook the eggs and eat them.
- When you throw away the eggs, put them in a sealed bag in the trash so children, pets or other animals can’t eat them.
- Wash and sanitize drawers or shelves in refrigerators where recalled products were stored.
- Wash reusable grocery bags often.
The CDC said the investigation is ongoing.
