KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The American Royal began Thursday, August 31 at the Kansas Speedway.
The world series of barbecue serves as the induction ceremony for The Barbecue Hall of Fame.
This year, the hall of fame inductees include Joe's KC owner Jeff Stehney, "Famous Dave" Anderson of the Famous Dave's restaurant chain, and Melissa Cookston, the "winningest woman in barbecue."
The American Royal lasts until Sunday, September 3. All champions will be crowned on the final day.
