Brighton Gardens makes staffing changes amid COVID-19 outbreak

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Staffing changes are being made at Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village amid a COVID-19 outbreak.

A corporate executive wrote in an email Thursday to family members of residents that Brighton Gardens Director Lisa Barnes “will transition from that role by the end of the month.”

Nursing Director Brooke Nickles will serve as interim director while a permanent replacement is sought, according to the email.

The Johnson County long-term care facility has been the site of one of the worst clusters of COVID-19 in the Kansas City area.

According to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, there have been more than 70 positive cases and 14 deaths linked to Brighton Gardens with the most recent onset occurring Monday.

Brighton Gardens is owned by Sunrise Senior Living, which is based in Virginia.

The staffing change comes after multiple 41 Action News stories about the coronavirus outbreak at Brighton Gardens.

A former employee, family of residents and county health officials have discussed concerns about how Brighton Gardens has handled the outbreak in recent weeks.
