COVID-19 now more deadly than flu in Kansas, nationwide

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — COVID-19 has killed more Kansans in 2019-2020 than regular influenza.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 111 deaths can be directly attributed to the flu and another 25 deaths were caused partially by the flu this year.

So far, there have been 151 deaths in Kansas due to COVID-19 as of May 5.

Last year, Kansas attributed 73 deaths directly to the flu, and 196 the year before that.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates 24,000 to 62,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019, and April 4, 2020.

According to Johns Hopkins University, 70,110 deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 so far in the U.S, making the virus more deadly than influenza nationwide.
