LANSING, Kan. — A law enforcement official leaving the Lansing Correctional Facility early Friday morning said everything inside the prison was good and back to normal.
Thursday, the Kansas Department of Corrections confirmed some inmates left their cells at the medium-security prison in Lansing and were damaging offices.
A food delivery truck came and went before 6 a.m. Friday, indicating things were back to normal at the facility.
41 Action News reached out to the Department of Corrections for an update early Friday.
They responded with an update around 10 a.m.
According to the prison, the disturbance ended around 1 a.m. Friday and no staff members were injured.
Two inmates received minor injuries and were treated on site. All of the inmates are accounted for and are now secured in one of the new units at the facility.
Prison staff are investigating who was involved and "appropriate responses for each," which they expect to take several days.
Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said he expects it will take some time before the incident is turned over to prosecutors to consider filing charges.
"We will have to wait for a full investigation occurs before we can consider any charges being filed on anyone due to the actions yesterday," Thompson said in an emailed statement Friday. "I know there is a lot of work for the staff will have to do before they even look at providing us potential cases."
A man in the prison told 41 Action News over the phone that inmates were upset with how the prison was handling a cluster of COVID-19 cases at the facility. The state said it began handing out face masks to prisoners Thursday.
Prison staff said things like cameras, windows, fire extinguishers and offices were damaged in the disturbance.
This is a developing story, we will update it throughout the day as new information comes in.
