KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Experts are urging parents to remind their children about the dangers of vaping during the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic is causing stress, and experts fear young people are turning to e-cigarettes to cope.

Dr. Larry Mitnaul said the devices could cause a variety of issues in young people.

“Kids can be irritable, moody, cognitively their thinking can be slower than it should be otherwise. Not to mention, the other potential impacts on other organs systems like the lungs and causing injury there, and all of this of course puts a strain on the heart,” he explained.

Mitnaul, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, said parents who are concerned about their children using e-cigarettes should confront them by asking certain questions.

“Do you know anyone that does it? Is that something that sounds attractive to you? Presented and packaged in all these flavors, I can see how it can be attractive to someone. But have you heard? Have you heard that there’s some really significant consequences around its use?" he demonstrated.

Mitnaul added that another sign of vaping use in children could be behavior changes such are irritability or slower thinking.
