LANSING, Kan. — Friends and family of George Robare, the Lansing Correctional Facility supervisor who died Monday from complications with COVID-19, remember him as a happy man with a great sense of humor, dedicated to his family and job.
Robare is survived by his wife, Susan, and his daughter, Rachel.
“Amazed at the responses that I have gotten from his former employees saying how much they enjoyed working with him and how he will be missed," Susan Robare said Wednesday.
Susan told 41 Action News that she and her daughter will get through this tough time with each other's help.
Rachel was supposed to get married this month, but the wedding was postponed to May 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now she’s getting married, will get married in May of next year, and of course her father won’t be there to walk her down the aisle," Susan said.
George served as a correctional officer at Lansing for 36 years.
On Tuesday, another employee at the prison passed away, but the Kansas Department of Corrections has not yet released his name.
“I knew them personally, worked with them, they were great officers, great human beings," said Myron Alford, a retired Lansing Correctional officer.
Alford said it was always a good day when he worked with the two officers. Alford wants their names added to the memorial at the prison for officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“I know as many people as they have with the infection, the odds are somebody is going to die, and I sure didn’t want any of them and I sure didn’t want him to," Alford said.
Susan agrees with Alford and wants people to remember George and keep his family and friends top of mind.
“We can’t touch him, we can’t see him, once they’re placed in that bag, they cannot open it again," Susan said.
Memorial servicesfor George will take place in July, and he will be buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
