KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Grocery delivery services are seeing a big boost with so many people trying to stay home as much as possible.
Delivery straight to your door comes with a price though, and the 41 Action News Investigators compared costs for some of the services available in the metro.
Hy-Vee's Aisles Online
Hy-Vee's service requires a minimum order of $30. Pickup is free.
Delivery: $9.95 per order.
However, with a $99 annual membership, you will get unlimited free delivery.
Using this service requires planning ahead. When the 41 Action News Investigators searched on Wednesday afternoon, the soonest delivery options were for Sunday.
Walmart Grocery
The same is true of Walmart's service. Delivery windows were only available four days out.
Delivery: $9.95, or free with a monthly fee of $12.95 or an annual membership of $98.
Right now you can get free delivery with a 15-day trial of Delivery Unlimited.
Pickup at Walmart is free, and there appear to be more time windows available for that option.
Instacart
Instacart offers delivery from stores such as Price Chopper, Aldi and Costco. It has more options for the last-minute shopper. We were able to select same-day delivery from Price Chopper.
Delivery: $3.99 for orders $35 and up
An Instacart Express membership provides free delivery on orders $35 and up for a cost of $9.99 per month or $99 for the year.
Service fee: $2
Instacart also offers free pickup at certain stores.
Shipt
Shipt delivers from stores such as CVS, Target, Hy-Vee and Petco. It is different in that you must sign up for a membership to use the service.
Delivery: Free with membership for orders over $35
A membership is $14 monthly or $99 for a year.
Shipt's site offers the disclaimer that product prices may be a bit higher than in store to "cover the costs of picking, packing and processing." The company estimates a $35 order will cost about $5 more than it would if you purchased it yourself in a store.
The 41 Action News Investigators were able to get next-day delivery from Target.
Other tips
For all grocery delivery orders, USA Today recommends checking order delivery times after midnight as services "reassess their resources and grocery stores have time to restock."
Don't forget to tip the shopper or delivery driver who saved you a trip to the store.
