KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Citing budgetary and health concerns, the city of Independence announced Tuesday it has canceled its annual Independence Day Fireworks Show scheduled for July 3.
It’s not the first fireworks show in the Kansas City metro to be canceled. Earlier this month, Blue Springs, Lee's Summit, Roeland Park, Fairway and Westwood all announced plans to cancel their respective shows.
Independence City Manager Zach Walker said leaders were hopeful to reach partnerships with sponsors to help support the annual event, but were unable to finalize those agreements.
“…(We) do not believe it is in the interest of the public health to plan such a large gathering of citizens and visitors at this time,” Walker said in a release. “We are hopeful to reengage with potential sponsors to make this event possible next year."
