University of Kansas Health System update

Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System changed up the program Tuesday morning.

Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infectious diseases, got his COVID-19 vaccine on air to show people the whole process.

In terms of patient numbers, doctors at KU Health were treating 58 people with acute COVID-19 infections Tuesday. Of those, 26 were in the intensive care unit and 20 on ventilators.

Sixty-eight patients are in recovery stages.

Live entertainment venues get lifeline in latest stimulus bill

Owners of entertainment venues struggling due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic say they see the light at the end of the tunnel with the new stimulus package.

Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Chief Donna Lake says firefighters should be included in the first round of COVID-19 vaccine distribution given the high percentage of medical calls to which they respond.

Lake said 76% of her department's calls are medical in nature, which makes her firefighters "patient-facing" personnel and therefore qualified to receive the vaccine.

Councilman questions Overland Park CARES Act money disbursements

Some City Council members in Overland Park are questioning the city's disbursements of CARES Act funding. They argue that giving the money to charities and other organizations who then give to people in need causes unnecessary expenses in administrative fees.

KCMO's Meals on Wheels sees dramatic spike in need

Organizers at KCMO's Meals on Wheels said their number of deliveries has increased 700% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the pandemic, the nonprofit was taking 50 meals to seniors on a weekly basis. Now, they deliver 400 meals weekly.

Prairie Village's Blue Moose to remain open

A Prairie Village restaurant credits community support, help from its landlord and expected funds from the new stimulus package for motivating its owners to stay open.

Blue Moose Bar and Grill will not close on Dec. 31 as it had previously announced.
