KANSAS CITY, Mo. — President Donald Trump announced a list of executive orders Saturday to provide federal aid to people struggling financially due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One of his memorandums described an additional $400 weekly benefit for unemployed workers. The memorandum said states would be responsible for taking care of 25% of it, using COVID-19 relief money. States would be able to pay more if they choose to.
Gardner resident and longtime travel agent Connie Mayberry said she is a bit skeptical about actually seeing the benefits.
"I have hope, but, you know, nothing's set in stone," she said, "and then how long will it take for the state to implement it with any changes."
Mayberry said she's been grateful that independent contractors such as herself have been included in federal relief to unemployed workers. As a travel agent, she doesn't see improvements for her industry coming anytime soon.
"With that $600 going away, it was very scary because we'll be one of the last businesses to come back," Mayberry said.
The federal help, according to Mayberry, has made a huge difference.
"For those of us in the hospitality world, it's a must for us to be able to survive," she said.
Topeka resident Lorie Gaut said she is struggling to make ends meet without the $600. Gaut has worked in catering and said her income took a significant hit because of the pandemic.
She said the extra $600 allowed her to stay on top of bills. Regardless of if Trump's orders work out, she hopes more federal aid is on the way soon.
"I just never know now," Gaut said. "There's just so much uncertainty. It's very stressful and it takes its toll emotionally it really does."
