KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas reported an unemployment rate of 10 percent in May, which is lower than what it was in April in the apex of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The unemployment rate fell 1.9 percent from 11.9 percent April to May, but it's still up significantly from the 3.1 percent unemployment rate reported in March, before the pandemic had major effects on the job market.

Kansas Department of Labor Secretary Delia Garcia said over 24,000 jobs were added in May.

“Preliminary May estimates released today show Kansas gained back 17 percent of the jobs lost in March and April due to efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19,” Senior Labor Economist, Tyler Tenbrink said.

Kansas nonfarm jobs were down by 110,100 from May 2019 to May 2020.
