KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A March report from the Kansas City, Missouri, Aviation Department shows passenger traffic at Kansas City International Airport decreased by more than 50 percent compared to that month last year.
The department said 480,690 people traveled through KCI in March 2020, which is a 52.8 percent decrease in traffic from March 2019.
The number of people boarding planes at KCI was also down more than 50 percent.
According to the report, the number of total passengers arriving and departing year-to-date is 2,096,924, a 20.8 percent decrease from 2019.
The number of passengers boarding a plane year-to-date is down by 21.4 percent, for a total of 1,037,960.
“The pandemic has hit the airline industry hard worldwide, as Stay-at-Home Orders and health concerns are keeping people from flying,” Pat Klein, director of aviation, said in a news release. “While passenger figures are way down, the airport is still open should people need to travel. The entire airport team is striving to make the experience as safe as possible. We are here at the ready.”
Air cargo showed a smaller percentage decrease in the March report, down just 5.8 percent for the month and 3 percent year-to-date.
