KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City International Airport will receive more than $2.7 million in federal funding to reconstruct runway lighting.
U.S. Rep. Sam Graves announced Tuesday that KCI would be getting the money through the Airport Improvement Program.
The grant requires a local match of nearly $700,000, but that will also be federally funded through the CARES Act.
KCI is receiving just more than $43 million from the CARES Act Airport Grant program "to deal with the prevention of, preparation for, and response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the news release.
"With the passage of the CARES Act, this AIP grant will receive full federal funding and won’t be required to meet a match. This is even more important as cities and airports are faced with less revenue due to the coronavirus,” Graves said in the release. “I’m thrilled to see KCI be one of the first to benefit from this CARES Act change and receive this important funding.”
The $43 million can be used for airport expenditures and operating expenses, which includes payroll, utilities and debt payments.
Last week, the Kansas City, Missouri, Aviation Department released a report that showed a more than 50% drop in passenger traffic in March compared to that month in 2019.
