KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly is extending her state’s declaration of emergency by two more weeks.

Kelly announced in her Wednesday briefing she plans to extend the declaration, which was previously set to expire May 1, to May 14.

From there, the Kansas legislature will have the ability to extend it further, to June 13, if necessary, Kelly said.

Kelly said the extension will not impact county operations or federal funding.

While the extension requires Kelly to replace her current executive orders, that does not mean the orders themselves will be extended.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Dr. Lee Norman joined Kelly at the press conference.

He said the KDHE is in the process of hiring 25 full-time contact tracing staff members.

Norman also said there are half a million more test kits on their way to Kansas.
