LAWRENCE, Kan. — Students at the University of Kansas tell 41 Action News they support the university's requirement of face masks on campus.
Students and staff received an email about the announcement Thursday.
KU senior and student body vice president Grant Daily said he believes the decision is in everyone's best interest.
"If students want to learn in person, as many of us do because that's the way we learn best, we're going to have to find ways to come together to do that in a safe way," Daily said.
Daily said he is excited to get back to in-person learning this fall. He said the sudden change to online learning in the spring wasn't easy.
"It was really difficult, and I didn't meet the expectations I had for myself and I think a lot of students felt that way," Daily said.
Third-year student Nicole Dolan said she's proud of the school for implementing the rule, but she does have a few reservations.
"I am concerned that people aren't going to take this seriously because the whole mask situation doesn't work unless everyone is wearing one," Dolan said.
Violations will be reported to the university's human resource management or student affairs.
Senior Julie Jorgensen said she wants to know how the school will hold students accountable.
"I'm more or less just curious on how they manage this process," Jorgensen said.
Daily said it's a tough time for college students right now, but he hopes his peers will realize they have a chance to make a big difference.
"I get that a lot of my students and peers are really sad and aren't doing well, but this is also a unique opportunity to make sure that we leave something behind that's better for those that come behind us," Daily said.
